Smallest Digital Camera

So what is the smallest digital camera? Or maybe better, “What is the smallest camera worth buying?” Good question! The answer depends on what you are really looking for. See below for the Point’n’shoot, video and dSLR winners.

The absolutely smallest cameras are the low-quality pen types. They come in a variety of brands that you have never heard of. They are cheap enough so you might want to take a look at some of these available on Amazon. Personally, I can’t understand why these would serve you better than the camera you probably already have on your phone.

The world of point’n’shoot cameras has grow massively and your pick of small cameras in this range is considerable. There are dozens of cameras in the sub-150g/5.3oz range, but currently there are 3 at only 100g/3.5oz!

  • Casio Exilim EX-S5 – A basic, inexpensive tony camera camera.
  • Nikon Coolpix S220 – 10MP with 3x zoom. Sadly, this camera doesn’t get as good of reviews as the following Casio.
  • Casio Exilim EX-Z80 – Last and not at all least, an excellent well reviewed, 8MP tiny camera with 3x zoom.

Winner: The 100g/3.5oz Casio Exilim EX-Z80.

For video cameras, there is the well liked Veho branded mini-DV camera. You can find these same cameras with a variety of different brand names on it suggesting a common manufacture, but the Veho seems to get the best reviews.

The best, small dSLR depends on how to judge “smallness,” dimensional size or weight? In any case you have choices depending on which brand you prefer. WHen you buy a dSLR you are buying into a system of lenses and flashes, so there is no “best” for me to pick for you.

Olympus offers the E420, a true SLR digital camera with 10MP, live view, interchangeable lens system and a wonderfully tiny “pancake” 25mm f2.8 lens.
Dimensions: 129.5 x 91 x 53 mm / 5.1 x 3.6 x 2.1 in
Weight: 380g / 13.4oz

Slightly bigger in most ways, but still tiny is the Nikon D40. It is a 6MP camera with all the features that you would expect of a high-end dSLR camera.
Dimensions: 126 x 94 x 64 mm (5.0 x 3.7 x 2.5 in)
Weight: 471 g (1.0 lb)

So those are the current options and picks for smallest digital camera. Have fun!
